Tivoli Audio - Wi-Fi Radio
Tivoli launch the Tivoli Wifi Radio.
We are the first retailer in the UK to have the Tivoli Wi-fi radio on demonstration. It is an excellent Internet radio. Available in mono for £499 and the optional stereo speaker is £79, the same price as the optional sub-woofer. It can work with either a wired network connection or as part of a wireless network. Typical of Tivoli it has a great musical sound and excellent build quality. As the future of DAB and DAB+ are not set, the analogue switch off date has not been decided, so, internet radio looks set to become a viable radio option for our customers.
Archive information only.Review of the Tivoli Model One by Colin MacKenzie (2003)
When initially confronted by the Tivoli Model One radio, there is a retro style look to it, but it becomes evident that this radio is well built and has a quality of finish that you would come to expect if it had been made by it's UK importers (Ruark) (2007 Note- Ruark now manufacture the Vita Audio range).
The cabinet is constructed from solid wood, not like many of its plastic counterparts. It uses a decent long throw speaker driver (3")and the radio looks grand on my desktop (our review sample has now been prised from my desk and returned).
It has AM and FM although the tests were conducted on FM only. It has the facility of an external as well as internal aerial. The Model One is mains operated and has a 12volt external power supply socket on the rear, suitable for all those caravaners out there. The tuning knob has a quality 'feel' about it, and has a 5:1 geared down ratio with led indicator.
The radio is available in the Uk as mono only and comes in a choice of four finishes which are Hunter maple, Classic Walnut, Cobalt Cherry and Silver White (the silver white is a wipable finish). Designed American Audio legend, Henry Klaus, it therefore has an excellent pedigree.
How well does it perform?
We tried the Tivili here in our office, where we have never managed to receive FM on any portable radio so far. Even the digital radio we tried late in 2001 only worked near the window. I was exceptionally surprised after saying "it won't work here without being near the window" to discover excellent reception all around the room with the external piece of wire supplied. Even more surprised when the radio worked with it's own internal aerial. The sound, as you would expect from a mono radio is not hifi in the strictest sense but is better than most other similar radios I've heard. This is probably due to its substantial build, quality inbuilt amplifier and speaker. As it will probably take some time for digital radios to sound like this for the price, it's well worth the investment. It's absolutely ideal for offices, kitchens and caravans. Highly recommended for the casual radio listener and better value than some other radios I won't mention. A great radio for the office desk, assuming your firm is as advanced as us and encourages real music in the workplace.
